Treatment options

The right active, chosen for your skin.

Prescription skin treatment is a medical decision. Your physician selects based on your concern, skin history, other medications and goals.

The $29 fee covers the physician visit. Medication, laboratory testing and pharmacy costs, if applicable, are separate. A prescription is not guaranteed.

Physician-led

Better treatment starts with understanding what's actually going on.

Two people with breakouts can need completely different treatment. So can two people with dark spots. The visible result is the same; the mechanism underneath is not.

NORBU MD does not start with a prescription. A board-certified physician reviews what you are seeing, how long it has been happening, what you have already tried and what else is going on medically.

From there, treatment is chosen for the cause — and adjusted over time, because skin treatment is rarely finished after the first plan.

Your physician reviews

  • What your skin concern looks like and how long it has lasted
  • Products and treatments you have already tried
  • Medical history and skin conditions
  • Current medications, including hormonal contraception
  • Pregnancy status or plans, which change what is safe to prescribe
  • Sun exposure and daily routine
  • Your goals and how much routine complexity you want

Understanding skin treatment

Fewer products. Better decisions.

Prescription skincare vs. cosmetic skincare.

Cosmetic products are formulated to improve the appearance of skin. Prescription treatments are medications regulated for specific medical uses, prescribed after an evaluation, with known risks and contraindications.

That is the practical difference: a prescription active is chosen for your diagnosis and monitored by a physician, rather than selected from a shelf based on marketing.

Why hormones and metabolic health can affect skin.

Skin responds to what is happening in the rest of the body. Hormonal shifts can influence oil production and pigmentation, and adult acne or melasma often follows those patterns rather than appearing at random.

When your history suggests it, your physician can look at that broader picture instead of treating only what is visible on the surface.

Why the right active matters more than having more products.

Long routines are common and often counterproductive. Layering multiple strong actives can irritate the skin barrier, which can make the original concern harder to treat.

A physician-directed plan is usually simpler: the right prescription active, used consistently, with sun protection and enough time to judge whether it is working. Individual results vary, and most treatments need months rather than weeks.

Questions

Prescription skin care, answered.

What does the $29 physician visit include?

The $29 fee covers your online visit with a licensed NORBU MD physician: review of your skin concern, history, medications and goals, and a personalized treatment plan when treatment is clinically appropriate. Medication and pharmacy costs are separate.

Am I guaranteed a prescription?

No. Your physician may determine that a prescription is not appropriate, that a different approach fits better, or that an in-person evaluation is needed.

Can skin really be evaluated online?

Many common concerns such as acne, texture change and pigmentation can be evaluated through telehealth with a good history and clear photos. If your physician believes an in-person examination is needed, they will tell you.

How long before I see a difference?

Most prescription skin treatments need consistent use over months rather than weeks, and it is common for acne to look worse before it improves. Individual results vary.

What side effects are common with tretinoin?

Dryness, peeling, redness and irritation are commonly reported, particularly early in treatment, and sun sensitivity increases. Your physician will review the full prescribing information for anything prescribed to you.

Can I use tretinoin if I'm pregnant or trying to conceive?

No. Topical retinoids including tretinoin are not used during pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Tell your physician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy.

Are compounded formulations FDA-approved?

No. Compounded formulations are prepared by a pharmacy and are not FDA-approved. If a compounded treatment is considered for you, your physician will explain what it contains and why it is being recommended.

Do I still need sunscreen?

Yes. Daily sun protection is part of nearly every prescription skin plan, and it is especially important for pigmentation concerns and while using retinoids.

Can I keep using my current products?

Often, but not always. Bring your current routine to your visit. Some combinations increase irritation, and simplifying is frequently part of the plan.

What if my treatment isn't working?

Tell your physician. Skin treatment is adjusted over time, and changing strength, frequency or the active itself is a normal part of ongoing care.

Do I need insurance?

No. The $29 physician visit is paid directly. Medication costs are separate and depend on the pharmacy and what your physician prescribes.

Is NORBU MD available in my state?

NORBU MD provides care through licensed physicians across the United States. Availability can vary by state and is confirmed during intake before your visit.
